Nearly 10 years since my last update on DeviantArt and it's safe to say that enough time has passed and life changes have occurred.

Let's start with an obvious one (to me). Nearly graduated college. Married and with a family.

Another one, due to being in a creative rut, pregnancy, and covid, I haven't done a photoshoot in about two to three years. Before that I had been puttering about with half thought out shoot ideas and no follow through.

This year, I aim to change a few things:

Two well thought out, prepared, full team photoshoots.

Carefully curated and edited photos from shoots.

The lovely Samantha has taken on the role of my photo-assistant extraordinaire and is keeping me on schedule. I am following my favorite photographers, reading their blogs, watching their youtube videos, taking notes on editing. I am working on making my photography a priority in my life since it has fallen far from the top in the last 5 years or so.

I have a lot to catchup on here though as well: deviantArt formats have changed so much! I am pairing down my portfolio, following list, favorites. It's good to be back and I'm excited to start fresh.

I done did it! I, along with 2 fellow artist friends, put on our own self-hosted art show. It was spectacular.

We worked on this for 6 months and it was amazing! I just decided to take the plunge and do something fun so I called out for 2 other artists and my friends Jess and Heather responded, also photographers, and we made it happen. We started with a few rules of agreeing on a theme (the Four Elements) and that we could only use photos we took this year. We had monthly deadlines (which were often missed) and meetings and discussions on food and music and setup. One woman used macro photography to express herself, another used landscape, and I used portraiture. It was an excellent mix. We also agreed to not show anyone our photos except the other and that part was excruciating! I was getting so excited and happy with my pictures but it was painful not to be able to share them with anyone.

We decided that we enjoyed it so much we're going to try and do this annually. Next year's theme is already planned out.

That being said, it is a bit of a relief to have it be over. The frustration in trying to communicate with the two other artists and meet up and all the planning --- I'm glad that parts over.

It was especially nice having our friends and family come out and support us and encourage us. It was hard at first, imaging that people were going to look and scrutinize and judge but I figured it couldn't be any different than submitting your art somewhat anonymously on the interweb, eh?

Though I have many photography ideas lately, it seems like it is never the right season to do them. I want to use a dead octopus as an accessory for water portraits, but it's the middle of winter and too cold; the same with the Ophelia themed shoot [water and winter].

I managed to take advantage of a semi-warm winter mid-morning to gather some friends and fake blood and took photos out in the carport! I am so happy with the results, especially since I used my backdrop setup for the first time and it is amazing! I am obsessed now with the idea of (semi)studio photography! I want more backdrops so bad, that I'm fairly certain I'm just going to end up going to a fabric store and buying a bunch of texture type fabrics and converted them to backdrops.

I am at a real University now -- studying Social Work. Here's to knowing that this is my path and I'm having fun doing it!

For the holidays I managed to score some beautiful gifts! I got the Kitchenaid mixing stand that I have wanted for quite some time -- to make my baking dreams start coming true!

For my art, I was given this book on portraits that is stunning and inspirational, and my guy got me 2 Promaster light boxes and stands. I cannot wait to learn how to use them and create with them. For now I'm going to try and test them and set up some simple portraits. This is an incredible step for me because, while photography is a hobby of mine, I would like to step it up and to do that, lights was the appropriate direction. I also know that during this year, I want to do a shoot based on the "Lungs" album by Florence and the Machine (which I also got for the holidays.)

This year I don't want to use excuses -- whether it is in regards to my art, my health, or my school. I'm going to try harder.

I am finding myself less and less inclined to come to D.A. but at the same time, I am drawn to it -- it is where I put my first pictures up and even if I do decide to leave, I can imagine it still being here always in case I wish to return.

I managed to take a few pictures over the last couple of months; Victorian/Steampunk portraits, headshots for my actor friend, and portraits for friend's musical talents. It has certainly been good, taking photos again. School and work are time suckers, so I don't take pictures or do a lot worth taking pictures of lately. But when I do, I make the most of it.

Mat gave me a flippin fabulous tripod over the summer so that is one less thing I need to buy; however, I had to use my "lighting" money to pay for a traffic ticket, so now I have to start over on that project. Of course, my next object to acquire is actually one of those "5 in 1" reflectors -- a small one and a big one.

This Halloween I'm going as Leeloo and Mat is going as Corbin Dallas; my first couples costume! I'm so excited. Can't wait to say BIG BADA BOOM and MULTIPASS!
